Shingar Cinema Blast

The city of Ludhiana was literally shaken last month when a powerful explosion in a cinema on the evening of Sunday 14th October once again caused CMC to act quickly and attend to those seriously injured. On hearing of the blast CMC immediately despatched its ambulances to the scene. Their prompt action and the skill of their trained staff enabled them to stabilise the condition of the critically wounded and ensured their speedy transfer to CMC’s Trauma Centre.

Twenty-six patients (many aged between 14 and 30) were brought to CMC, three of whom were in a serious condition, one critical. Two patients had extensive injuries and underwent amputations of affected limbs, others had extensive fractures, two had minor burns and others had vascular injuries and lacerations. style="font-size:16.0pt;font-family: Arial">The entire CMC family was mobilised to help treat the injured.   Dr. Yashbir Dewan, in charge of the Trauma Centre, played a crucial role and doctors and surgeons from other departments were needed to give specialist treatment where necessary. Ten patients were taken to the high dependency ward and one to ICU.

The students of the CMC colleges responded to the urgent need for blood to help the critically injured by donating their own. Playing down his contribution, one medical student modestly said, ‘It was just a moral duty to which anybody should respond.’

CMC Ludhiana has always responded well to such emergencies in the past and this, of course, was no exception. The Chief Minister of the Punjab visited CMC on the Monday and witnessed for himself the excellent care being given to the victims.

 Free Dental Check-Up Camp

A team of dentists from Christian Dental College recently gave a comprehensive dental check-up to 800 children at a free camp held at Sacred Heart Convent School Sahnewal. Each child was given a card with a summary of their dental health and the recommended treatment plan, if any, which they were asked have countersigned by their parents to ensure practical implementation of the advice given and follow-up treatment. The dentists discussed the child’s dietary habits, the importance of oral hygiene and precaution and care of various kinds of dental problems during the consultations. It was stressed that parents should take more care of dental health of their children, taking necessary precautions to avoid aggravating dental problems among growing children.

Department of Biomedical Engineering

This department has undergone tremendous reorganisation; the five qualified biomedical engineers not only look after the repair of equipment but also collaborate with service companies on a pro-active basis for preventive maintenance.  A complete inventory of equipment has been compiled and is stored on a database; the department is on call ‘24/7’. CMC is becoming a centre for training of biomedical engineers.

Rural Dental Services

Christian Dental College (CDC) has a busy calendar for the remaining days of the year; its team will be working almost ever day in neighbouring villages within about 20km of Ludhiana. The provision of a new dental van, the chassis of which has now arrived at CDC, will make longer journeys safer and more feasible in the future.

RHOP Expansion

CMC was recently approached by a needy community in Malerkotla, situated about 40km south of CMC, to run a small hospital on an OPD basis. The Al-Kausar Welfare Trust provided a building and set up all the other required facilities like laboratory, X-ray facilities, a dental room and other support services including the personnel as helpers. In August the clinic was inaugurated in the name of Kausar-CMC Hospital.

There has been a good response to the OPD, with many patients being taken to CMC for admission, procedures, further investigations and operations. The Trust provides the transport and meals to the team of doctors and dentists who visit there everyday and reimburses CMC for all expenses; CMC contributes the expertise and the salaries of two doctors. Two small rooms (nine beds) have been set aside as day wards at the centre and a ward is being constructed to act as a delivery room.

In the first five weeks of the centre being opened 3,500 patients were seen. There are clinics every day with some specialists attending once or twice a week.   Looking at the response of the patients to services being offered, the Trust is planning to install an ultrasound unit in the near future.
