Helping Small Mission Hospitals

Do you realize that by supporting CMC Ludhiana you are also helping some of the smaller mission hospitals in India?

The India Hub of the Global Surgery Unit was established in 2018, and is based at the Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, Punjab with a spoke network that spans nearly 100 hospitals from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu and from Gujrat to Assam. The network is led by Prof Dhruv Ghosh and Prof Parvez David Haque from CMC Ludhiana who have also set up two Sub-Hubs (regional coordinating sites) at Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata, West Bengal (East) and Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu (South). The Indian network comprises of a mix of urban and rural hospitals, teaching and district hospitals, some in the most remote parts of the world. The work therefore impacts the most disadvantaged and vulnerable population of the world. For more information please visit: https://www.globalsurgeryunit.org/global-surgery-our-teams/india-hub/

Research in Mission Hospitals.

A few years ago a Global Surgical Research Collaborative was established based initially on the University of Birmingham.  CMC Ludhiana was selected as the Indian hub for this research with spokes extending to other centres in India including mission hospitals.  The collaborative has been funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research [NIHR] and UK Overseas Development and relationships now include the Universities of Warwick and Edinburgh as well as the WHO Surgical Collaborative Centre in India.

The Global Surgical Research Collaborative is involved in a range of cohort studies, qualitative research and clinical trials which run in many centres throughout India with many mission hospitals contributing.  The mission hospitals are also, in many cases, direct beneficiaries of the infrastructural development which follows their involvement with the collaborative.

The mission hospitals involved in the Global Surgical research are:

  1. Lady Willingdon hospital, Manali (HP): Dr Philip Alexander
  2. Padhar Hospital, Betul (MP): Dr Ashish Choudhrie
  3. Madhipura Christian Hospital, Madhipura (Bihar): Dr Arpit Mathew
  4. Herbertpur Christian Hospital, Herbertpur (Uttarakhand): Dr Viju John
  5. Makunda Christian Leprosy and General Hospital (Assam): Dr Moloti

Dr Philip Alexander writes “CMC Ludhiana is our Alma mater. They help us whenever we need in whatever way they can by sending staff, advising us on equipment, serving as our referral centre for complicated patients, and being there for us. The help is constant, ever present and is a great reassurance. They also send their consultants and teams here to conduct specialty camps for our patients. We recently had an eye camp staffed and conducted by Dr Nitin Batra.  CMC Ludhiana also trains our junior doctors who come here for performing their service obligations.”
